The Blues Harmonica: Learning to play the harmonica: Blues harp 101: Lesson 1: The first step

Lesson 1: The first step

[ Index | Lesson 1 | Lesson 2 | Lesson 3 ]

Ready to go?
Got a blues harmonica in your hands and a midi player in your computer? OK! Here's:

The first step

Hold the harmonica with the lowest notes to your left (the channel numbers along the front of the instrument facing upwards) like this:

Put your mouth against the harmonica and blow. Don't bother about how many or which channels you blow into yet. If you do it right, it should sound something like this
Doesn't sound too bad, does it? What you just played, was the chord named C major - or usually just C.
That's why we say the harmonica is tuned in C, btw. When you blow into it - no matter where - you get the notes that belong to the C major chord.

Let's call it a draw

Some people feels that the word "suck" sucks, so instead of sucking the harmonica, we draw it. It's exactly the same, of course ;-)
Let's do the same as we did in the previous chapter, but with one small difference: instead of blowing, su... I mean draw through the instrument. And, oh yes, try to stay within the lowest half of the harmonica (channels 1-5) this time.

The chord you got, was a G (or G major) and here's how it's supposed to sound.

And then...

So far, so good!
You've learned how to play two different chords: C and G. It's time to play some music, so let's go on to
lesson 2!
